If your Idaho plates are expired and the registration has lapsed, you can still donate your car. For Idaho Wheels Forward, what matters is that you have a valid Idaho (or other state) title in your name — not current tags or paid registration. You do not need to renew the registration or pay any back fees just to give your vehicle away. We arrange free towing anywhere in Idaho and you still receive a tax-deductible receipt.
Here’s how it works in Idaho: once you sign your title over to Idaho Wheels Forward (benefiting Heritage for the Blind), the vehicle becomes our responsibility, not yours. Whether it’s parked in Boise’s North End, Nampa, Idaho Falls, Coeur d’Alene, Twin Falls, Meridian, or out on a rural property, our licensed towing partners pick it up at no cost. You should let Idaho DMV know you’ve transferred the vehicle so you’re not on the hook for future tickets or taxes. We handle the rest: transport, sale, and the paperwork needed for your IRS deduction.
How to get your free pickup scheduled
1. Check that you have a valid title in your name
Expired registration is usually fine; the key is a clear title in your name. Find your Idaho title (or out-of-state title if you recently moved). Make sure there are no unknown liens and that the name matches your ID. If the title is lost, you can request a duplicate from your local Idaho DMV office in Boise, Pocatello, Lewiston, or your county’s DMV before scheduling pickup.
2. Tell us about your car and the expired tags
Reach out to Idaho Wheels Forward and share basic details: year, make, model, general condition, and that the registration is expired. Let us know if the car runs or is non-running, and where in Idaho it’s parked—driveway in Meridian, street in Caldwell, or on acreage outside Moscow. We’ll confirm that the expired registration won’t be an issue and set expectations for towing and paperwork.
3. Schedule your free Idaho pickup (no driving required)
Because your registration is lapsed, you don’t have to risk driving the car. Our towing partner comes to you anywhere in Idaho—Boise bench, Ammon, Post Falls, Kuna, Rexburg, or rural areas along I‑84 and US‑95. Pickup is completely free to you. The driver will guide you on where to sign the title. You hand over the keys (if you have them), and the tow truck handles the rest.
4. Sign the title and transfer responsibility
At pickup, you’ll sign your title over to Idaho Wheels Forward (benefiting Heritage for the Blind). Once the title is signed and the vehicle is loaded, it’s no longer your responsibility—even with expired tags. After the tow, you should submit a release of liability or notice of sale with Idaho DMV so their records show the transfer. That helps protect you from future tickets, taxes, or towing issues tied to the vehicle.
5. Receive your tax receipt and support blind services
After your vehicle is picked up, we process the donation and send you a tax receipt. In most cases, you can deduct at least $500; if it’s more, you’ll use IRS Form 1098‑C with your return. Your donation helps Heritage for the Blind provide services to people who are blind or visually impaired, while you clear an unregistered car out of your driveway or field at no cost.
Potential complications to watch for
No title or title not in your name
Tip: Expired registration is usually okay, but we do need a valid title in the donor’s name. If the title is lost, damaged, or still in a previous owner’s or relative’s name, visit your Idaho DMV for a duplicate or to retitle first. This extra step avoids delays and ensures we can legally transfer the vehicle out of your name.
Active loans, liens, or salvage branding
Tip: If a bank or lender is still listed on your title, we can’t complete the donation until the lien is released. Salvage or rebuilt titles are often acceptable in Idaho, but let us know upfront so we can confirm. Providing a clear photo of the front and back of your title helps us spot issues before the tow truck is dispatched.
Parking or storage issues with expired tags
Tip: Some Idaho cities and HOAs (for example, parts of Boise, Meridian, or Coeur d’Alene) may ticket or tow vehicles with expired tags parked on the street. If your car is at risk of being cited or impounded, tell us when you call. We’ll try to schedule a pickup window that gets it moved quickly from the street, apartment lot, or storage facility.
Not notifying Idaho DMV after donation
Tip: After your car is towed, you’re done with the vehicle—but Idaho DMV still shows you as the last owner until you file a notice of transfer or release of liability. Completing this simple step helps protect you from future tickets, toll notices, or tax questions tied to that VIN. Check the Idaho DMV website or your local office for the correct form and mailing address.
